Life Lessons - Embracing Mistakes

Don't fear failure.
Pinterest

Are you a perfectionist?  Do you stress over the smallest details, and tend to freak if something is not done just right?

I am, without a doubt, right there with you.  Actually, I like to think of myself as a recovering perfectionist.  I have finally admitted and recognized that I have a problem, so now I am working on it.

The problem with striving for perfection is that it is a goal you can never achieve.  No matter how good you do, there is always going to be some aspect that you could have done better.  You end up spending all of your time and energy working on that level of perfection, that you lose sight of everything else.

For some it goes even a step further - I know I can't do it perfectly, so why even bother!  They subconsciously know that a perfect success is not possible, so they avoid the situation all together to not have to deal with that sense of failure.  Your quest for perfection actually begins to stop you from even attempting new challenges or goals.

This is the level I was at, and to tell the truth still struggle with a bit.  The good news is that there is hope.  Through hard work and self-realization, I have begun to accept my imperfections and to allow myself room to make mistakes.  The fears are still there.  I'm just able to name them better, thus push through them easier.

If you find yourself obsessing over getting that craft just right, or putting off starting that new project at work; take the time to reflect on what you are really worrying about.  You may be surprised to find your desire for perfection holding you back.  If so, then take a deep breath and remember:

  1. Hi Holly, there should be some kind of place for people like us. Its hard to move forward sometimes when your a perfectionist. I struggle on a daily basis to feel completely fulfilled. But the simple fact is I won't unless I change my mindset. Thank you for co hosting the blog hop.

  2. Agree 100%!! I am a perfectionist too, but you can't be perfect so making more realistic expectations for yourself if key to not getting overwhelmed and giving up. I just entered a contest in dancing that i was terrified to do because I'm a relative beginner and I ended up getting 3rd place! You just never know until you try. Thanks for the encouraging post!
I found you through the blog hop! ;-)

  6. I do not worry about being a perfectionist, there's no chance and I have accepted that fact long ago.
